What Pipe Should You Use for a Residential Water Line?
For most rural Western Colorado homes, the water service line running from your well or tap to the house comes down to a choice between HDPE and PVC, with PEX showing up on shorter interior-adjacent runs. HDPE handles ground movement and freeze-thaw better and comes in long coils with fewer joints to fail. PVC costs less and does fine in a stable, straight trench.
That's the short version. The longer version is that the pipe is rarely the hard part — the ground it goes in is. Here's how we walk customers through it at the counter.
What a water service line actually has to survive
A service line is buried and forgotten for decades. That's the whole design problem. Once the trench is backfilled, every joint, every fitting, and every bit of material choice is locked in behind however many yards of dirt you just put back.
Out here, that line has to live with a few things:
- Ground that moves — clay soils that swell and shrink, and slopes that creep a little every spring
- Freeze-thaw cycling at the top of the soil column
- Rocky backfill, which is most of what comes out of a trench in this country
- Long runs, because rural lots put the well a good distance from the house
Every one of those pushes you toward a pipe with fewer joints and more give.
HDPE: fewer joints, more forgiveness
HDPE — high-density polyethylene, the black poly pipe — is what most rural service lines around here end up being. Two reasons.
First, it comes in long coils. A run that would take a stack of PVC sticks and a joint every twenty feet can often be one continuous piece of poly. Joints are where lines fail, so fewer joints is fewer places to fail.
Second, it flexes. When the ground shifts under it, HDPE moves with it rather than snapping. In soil that heaves seasonally, that's not a small advantage — it's the difference between a line that lasts and a line you dig up in eight years.
The trade-off is cost per foot and the fittings. Poly needs the right insert fittings and clamps, or it needs to be fused, and fusing means either equipment or a contractor who has it.
PVC: lower cost, straightforward runs
PVC is rigid, cheap, and completely proven. On a shorter run through stable ground — a straight shot with decent bedding and no serious slope — it does the job for less money.
Where it gets you is movement. PVC doesn't flex much, so when the ground moves, the stress goes to the joints. It's also less pleasant to work with in rocky backfill, where a sharp rock bearing directly on rigid pipe is a real concern. Good bedding sand solves that, but bedding sand is another material and another trip.
Where PEX fits
PEX shows up more often on the house side than the yard side — the run from where the line enters the building outward, or in retrofits where you're threading through existing structure. It's flexible and easy to work with in tight spaces. For a long buried yard run, most installers around here still reach for poly.
The questions that decide it faster than a spec sheet
When someone comes to the counter for a service line, we usually get to the answer with four questions:
- How long is the run? Past a certain distance, the joint math alone argues for coiled poly.
- What's the ground like? Slope, clay, and rock all push toward HDPE. Flat and stable opens PVC back up.
- Who's installing it? A contractor with fusion equipment has different options than a homeowner with a rented trencher.
- What's the water source? A well with a pitless adapter has different fitting needs than a tap off a domestic water line.
Answer those four and the pipe choice usually makes itself.
Two things to settle before you buy
First, talk to your county. Required burial depth, approved materials, and inspection timing vary by jurisdiction, and the inspector's list is the one that counts. Get it before you order, not after the trench is open.
Second, plan the fittings with the pipe. More service line headaches come from mismatched fittings and transitions than from the pipe itself.
